Sep 30, 2013 The hottest new kid on the block is the James Royal Palm in Miami
THE HOTEL SCENE JUST KEEPS GETTING HOTTER Since the 1940s heyday of beach-side promenading and afternoon tea, Miami’s
hotels have been top of the game – South Beach practically invented the lobby bar scene – and 2013 has seen a slew of new openings.
The hottest new kid on the block is the James Royal Palm
(doubles from $372), a sprawling art-deco beach-side retreat, which has 393 rooms. It’s pretty vast but palm-lined courtyards and elegant corners make it feel intimate.
North America’s sexiest city comes into its own during the winter sun season.
You could happily while away an entire week if you were so inclined. With two restaurants (one of them, Catch Miami, is an outpost of NYC seafood eatery Catch), two pools and three nightlife venues, there’s plenty to do.
Hot on its heels is the SLS Miami
(doubles from $390), a Philippe Starck project that has a penthouse designed by Lenny Kravitz. In an interview with Travel+Leisure, Kravitz explained: ‘It’s based on a world traveller who collects a lot of things. Trunks are used as drawers and there’s an antique-style stereo that looks like something your grandmother might have had.’
